I did not intend to alarm people, but I think a good policy is that
promoted by Teddy Roosevelt, "wwalk softly and carry a big stick".

Hi group
I spent 4 weeks in Ubud and other parts of Bali last year, with my
wife and 4 y.o. daughter. We're all still alive & thriving.
Previously I've wandered extensively about the back-blocks of Java.
Mangy and otherwise slightly scary-looking dogs are a feature of life
there, and they are lying about in droves on footpath and road by day;
they come to life as it gets dark and cooler at night. They are by
and large uninterested in people, and most (>99%) of the growling,
barking and scuffling is directed at other dogs.
Rabies outbreak notwithstanding, I'd echo Steve Potter's remark about
dogs in Indonesia - be alert, but don't be alarmed. The same could be
said for terrorist threats outside tourist traps ... but I wouldn't
say that :-)
