As one that first raised some doubt I am now satisfied that the upper bird
in the first photo I looked at on the internet is a Long-tailed Jaeger. When
the original was posted, was the image below the same bird?
With regard as to whether dark phase juveniles have been seen in Australia
before, the answer is yes. I have slides of one off Wollongong we saw on 15
Feb 1987. At that time there was doubt that the dark phase occurred in
adults but that is now proven although apparently rare.
