I have been requested by Melbourne Water to make birders aware that their
Operations personnel have been reporting problems with the G2 locks used by
permit holders (birders and fishermen). The problems are

* G2 locks have been disappearing, particularly from the Austin Road
gate which is not used by fishermen; and
* G2 locks are opened and then re-closed in a single link of the chain
so that the gate is left unlocked.

Given that Melbourne Water is about to issue new locks under the changed
system I reported earlier, they are anxious to avoid the unnecessary cost
and inconvenience of replacing locks. Given the goodwill that currently
exists between birders and Melbourne Water, I would ask birders to please
respect this request.

When contacted, I took the opportunity to ask when the new access letters
would be issued to birders. I was advised that there had been internal
delays but the letters, new locks, new signage and the induction programme
would soon be happening. Exactly when they were not sure.
