In 1983 whilst looking through a bookshop in Salisbury, England I came
across Ken Newman's Birds of Southern Africa, and impressed me so much I
flew to Johannesburg, got a job and birded there for nearly a year. In my
first week I was invited to a meeting of the Wits Bird Club and met the
author who informed me that (at the time) the publishers had only sent over
a handful of copies to the UK!
I still think it is one of the most usable bird-guides of the region, found
a relatively commercially-free site here
http://www.gardenbirds.co.za/books.htm (hope I'm not crossing Russell's
guidelines!)
