Denise,

I guess HD Pratt's Pocket guide (1996) is a good choice. Note: is it not
intended as a
"complete" field guide to the birds of Hawaii, this book illustrates most of
the species,
is an excellent guide for the bird habitats, and is a thumbnail guide to the
best places to find the birds.
There is also James
Kavanagh (2003) Hawaii Birds: An Introduction to Familiar Species
The most complete is
Pratt et al. (1987): A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the
Tropical Pacific

Denise,

I had a week birding on the Big Island about 8 years ago, and found A Pocket
Guide to Hawai'i's Birds (Pratt HD, Mutual Publications, Honolulu) pretty
useful. It would be a pretty good text for course. It is pretty cheap, I paid
USD 8.95 for it, so it wouldn't be a great financial burden for the course
participants. I would be happy to loan it to you so you can check it out.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford
