Hi All,
I'm posting to get some local reaction from my area, the Sunshine Coast
of Queensland. I live in the Glasshouse Mountains area, and have lived
in this house for 13 years. I became a birder back in 1985 whilst on an
extended holiday in Europe, and for the first time in my life had time
to smell the roses. I have lived on the Sunshine Coast for 21 years.
When I was first a birder, whistling ducks of both species were a bit
of an excitement, and certainly not commonplace. In fact I would
venture to call them uncommon then around here. In those days I was a
gung-ho birder, out there looking for birds at every opportunity.
However, in the few past years they have become rather commonplace, or
so it seems to me. We have a roofless courtyard in the middle of our
house, and most summer evenings as we eat our dinner under the stars,
we hear Plumed Whistling Ducks (I am pretty sure Plumed, though it is
dark when we eat) flying over the house. In winter our morning walk is
always taken when it is still dark, and then we also usually either see
or hear Plumed Whistling Ducks. They really do move around a lot in the
dark.
Is this the case all over the region, or do we happen to live under a
whistling duck flight path?
Cheers,
Jill
