Rob,
December can be hot at Cocoparra, but should offer opportunities for birds
still. Access by 2WD is no problems, the only road that may be a bit rough is
the Whitton Stock route south of Store Creek (see map on Link below). I also
suspect there won't be much water about so if it is hot, these will be the
spots to go (particularly for phtography). The only camping area is at Woolshed
Flat (and you can get a caravan in there) which shouldn't be too busy over
Christams (in fact is usually not very busy very often). Best spots for
bird-watching are the walks at Store and Jacks Creek, around the Ironbarks
picnic area and in Binya SF (to the south of Cocoparra) (and also further north
in Cocopara NR at Mailmans Gap but you will probably need directions to get
there (the local parks office in Griffith should be able to help). The most
rliable dams are in Binya SF (Wattle Dam on the road to Spring Hill and "Oak"
Dam on the road to the Mt Brogden walk). Just be careful of some of the roads
they can be a bit rough. Binya is good for White-browed Treecreeper (though
this is very local) and Painted Honeyeater (south of the Burley Griffin way is
the best spot but in good years they can be anywhere there is Yarran with
mistletoe.
Other spots around Griffith include Lake Wyangan (and associated swamps though
they are probably dry), the STP (if you can get in), Scenic Hill (though most
birds will be around Cocoparra) and further afirld Fivebough Swamp at Leeton
and the Murrumbidgee River.
If you are after any specific species let me know and I can try and help.
Cheers,
Peter

have a pleasant dilemma. My wife leases a car through her employment and for a
variety of reasons we are well behind in our kms.> I have a week before
Christmas (while she is still at work) where I have been given permission to
"go and find some birds to photograph".> I have never been to Cocoparra or that
immediate area. Any suggestions for December? I know it will, or could, be hot,
it is a conventional 2WD vehicle and I would prefer to camp.> > cheers Rob>
