Peter The pin is made of a bio-degradable substance that dissolves in about 15 minutes and that allows the hook to be exposed once it has sunk to a suitable level. What drops off is the small steel hook cover. These degrade completely in less than 12 months. Much better than having heaps of lead lying around in the ocean! I wondered at the time just how many more of these pins would end up on the ocean floor every year, and whether that would create any problems.
