When I lived in Adelaide ('75 to '93), sparrows were called sproggies, or
sprogs, by ordinary (non-birder) folk.Don't know what birders called them as
I didn't start birding until '88.
The same name(s) was often given to a group of kids of pre-school
age, ie it was a collective noun for this age-group (obviously something to
do with their capacity for feral behaviour)
