In my childhood in Melbourne, Victoria we always referred to Sparrows as
Sproggies.

I still do - though, living in Adelaide, I've never discussed this with
locals.

There are plenty of Sproggies where I live (border of Royston Park & Marden
in greater Adelaide, SA). They've delighted my tiny grandsons who have
recently come to Adelaide from Singapore. The littlies throw bread to them
(sorry if that's verboten) and watch them flying in and out of the holes at
the top of the Stobie pole outside my house. The sproggies are such
cheerful little chaps.

Paul, as for Skylarks (another feral species), I've enjoyed them too as they
behave exactly as you describe. So beautiful. They were pointed out to me
by members of Birds SA.

Not all that sure about the feral Blackbirds in my garden. They are garden
wreckers - but their beautiful song can forgive them everything.
