Hi All,

This afternoon we saw our first White-winged Black Terns of the season at Caloundra just north of Brisbane, Qld. I didn't get good views, but thought they appeared to have black bellies. My companion, Barb Dickson, had better views and confirmed the black bellies of remnant breeding plumage. We only saw them fly over as we were getting into our kayaks to return from Bribie Island to the mainland, and we had no opportunity to follow them.

Had marvellous views of Great Egret in breeding plumage with green face, black bill and red legs. I got a few pics. Then just around the corner were a couple more Great Egrets with normal yellow faces and bills and dull legs.

Has anyone else sighted White-wings prior to today? It is quite early for them. Their arrival here has been as late as December, but usually it's later in November. Interestingly, we have now seen Commons and White-wings in Caloundra this season, but no migrant terns have yet shown up in Noosa to our knowledge.

Cheers,

Jill
