Actually it's not too far from the Mt Coot-tha Bot Gardens to JC
Slaughter Falls - hangout of Powerful Owls and White-throated Nightjars

Hi Steve,
Since you're coming from South Austraila, if you can get a car I'd
recommend driving up to Mt Glorious. There's a couple of walking
trails through the sub-tropical rainforest, and I've seen Satin and
Regent Bowerbirds and Green Catbirds right at the picnic area. From
Toowong it would be less than an hour's drive one way I think,
depending on which way you go.
The scenic route would be via Mount Nebo. There's lookouts along
the way, and picnic areas. Try googling "Brisbane Forest Park".
It's a nice drive although the roads are steep and windy in parts.
The short way to Mt Glorious is through Samford.
The Botanic Gardens at Mt Cootha are nice but I can't remember
seeing anything there more exciting than Swamphens, Coots and ducks.
The other thing you might see at Mt Glorious in the late afternoon
is Antechinus (used to be called marsupial mice) if you're
interested in animals as well as birds.
It depends on how much free time you'll have also.
