The following has been reported by Niven McRie at the sewage ponds in
Darwin. Note that access is restricted so you would need to contact the
local birders,
A Eurasian Little Grebe has turned up at Leanyer Sewage Works, 9 years and
2 days after the first one was seen.
It's easy to pick out when you're looking at all the grebes - it has a
fully red neck with only a narrow dark line down the back of the neck, red
cheeks, a dark crown, red eye instead of yellow like the Australasian
ones, and a pale patch between the eye and the bill, possibly more whitish
than on Australasian. If seen in flight it shouldn't show white in the
wings. Though flight views so far haven't been particularly good, it
looked to have brown wings, with white underwing lining. It was in the
pond to the right of the central north-south track (the one with the large
structure at the near corner). Given that most of the grebes are still in
winter plumage it stands out quite well as a red-neck, or from a distance
as a dark neck.
The Long-toed Stint is still there, along with Oriental Plover and now
four Little Ringed Plovers.
