Hi All,

I've just had a report from Ingrid Witte (Park Ranger) of a Striated
Grasswren being seen in Sturt National Park near Mt Wood Lookout.

Schodde and Mason's Directory to Australian Passerines refers to an
unknown population of Striated Grasswren in spinifex country near
Epsilon cattle station located 100 kilometres north of Cameron's Corner
in far south-west Queensland. Geographically located between the
nominate mallee race and the isolated Queensland race rowleyi, it seems
that nobody knows which race this population belongs to, or whether it
may constitute a fourth subspecies altogether. Apparently the only
museum specimens that ever existed are lost, and nobody has seen these
birds for a while. If the report is true, with reference to their
isolation, they may well be considered distinct species.

Apparently weather conditions in the Sturt NP area have been doing
"strange things" this year. I'm interested to hear if anyone else has
news about this report.

Cheers,

Tim Dolby
