Thanks to all who provided info on Song Thrush in Melbourne. I managed to get
good views of a single bird in the fern gully at the RBG after 2 hours
searching. Also found a number of Tawny Frogmouth primary and breast feathers
under the large tree just inside Gate D, ?predation by large owl?Had previously
searched unsuccessfully for Song Thrush in East Brunswick.
Unfortunately the Port Fairy pelagacic was cancelled (well, fortunately,
if one wished to remain alive) so consoled ourselves with a great day at the
Werribee treatment works on 6/9 with the "Axedale Gang" where managed to see
first-ever Aussie bittern. Thanks to ?Steve & Andrew in blue Mazda2 who directed
us back to the Conservation Ponds where we got great static views of two
bitterns, after seeing (probably a third) in flight. Also saw Spotted Crake when
looking for first bittern.
Other birding highlights were a (live) Tawny Frogmouth in backyard of our
hosts in South Fitzroy, only 80m from Brunswick St, and a pair of Black-eared
Cuckoo in State Forest between Bendigo and Axedale.
Didn't try for Barbary Dove as got distracted by delights of cultural
Melbourne.
