I haven't got the date to hand but I saw a lone Common Mynah at Pirrinuan
between Dalby and Jandowae. Qld approx. two years ago. Grain cropping
country and miles from anywhere. I haven't got a clue where it would have
come from. Certainly well out of what I thought would have been suitable
habitat. In Levenstrath, a rural area near Grafton, NSW, they are well
established in open grazing country and have displaced eastern rosella and
rainbow lorikeets from hollows and have taken over a dead tree with hollows
that previously had been dominated by starlings. First seen probably 10
years ago breeding in old growth tree with hollows on grazing property by
owner who thought they were cute and cheeky. Now in flocks of up to 40
birds. Often seen on power lines and feeding on side of roads. They
certainly congregate anywhere there is supplementary cattle feeding or feed
bins with grain. Clarence Valley Council provide mynah traps free of charge
to ratepayers.
