Hi Michael,

As I said in my posting yesterday they were quite approachable, but it's interesting to hear Graham say he had a similar experience with birds in the nth-west of the state. Perhaps it's a breeding phenomenon...there are some 'classic' old school photos of people touching Grey Fantails and other species sitting on nests, so maybe Painted Finch (or even just this pair) are more tolerant when breeding. The male PF was much less approachable at times when he was away from the nest though and took a bit of work to get decent photos.

For what it's worth I'm in the camp that's tending to think they're wild (my reference to sitting on the fence yesterday was a little tongue in cheek). But to be honest I don't think we'll ever know. Either way I hope they get a clutch (or two) out...I'm also in the camp that thinks they're a great looking bird!

Cheers, Dean

The pics of the Painted Finches were pretty good, did the birds seem
unusually tame, which might suggest that they were escapees or releases?
Sightings of northern birds south of their usual range are becoming more
frequent with Global Warming, but Jerilderie is a LONG way south.
