Dear All, In October, the Southern Oceans Seabird Study Association (SOSSA)
will be hosting a two night/two day pelagic trip from Ulladulla, New South
Wales. This not-for-profit trip will run at the peak of the east coast pelagic
season and promises to offer a bonanza of winter Southern Ocean species
interspersed with the first of the summer seabird migrants. The trip also
coincides with the southerly migration of Humpback Whales and other cetacean
species. Your vessel is the MV Banks (http://www.mvbanks.com/index.html), a
fully surveyed, 100ft vessel with warm showers, comfortable sleeping
arrangements and superb food. Taking a maximum of 18 passengers, there is
plenty of viewing space and ample room for photographers to get the best shot
of visiting seabirds. While the trip is underway, SOSSA will be catching birds
on their banding program which is the longest, continual study of the Wandering
Albatross at sea in the world today. A previous trip report from the deepwater
pelagic in October 2007 can be found on the following link:
http://www.sossa-international.org/Pages/Pelagic%20Reports/Oct2007Ulladulla.htm
I went on this trip last year and was very impressed by the species diversity
we encountered including Gould's, Black, Great-winged and Giant Petrels. Cost
is $585 per person for the trip including all meals and accommodation on board.
Enquiries should be directed to Lindsay and Janice at SOSSA on
or by phone on 02 4271 6004. All proceeds are returned to
SOSSA to assist in their vital research and the conservation of biodiversity in
the Southern Ocean. Regards, Inger Inger Vandyke Natural History Writer and
Photographer Publicity Officer - Southern Oceans Seabird Study Association
