G'day Birders, this morning while walking back from dropping my kids at school I saw a small brown bird in the undergrowth at Darks Common, Lapstone. I tried to turn it into a white-browed scrubwren (as I would have expected here) but failed dismally. I ended up getting a fantastic view of a pair or Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens flitting around about 2 - 3 m from me. This I was not expecting. I have never seen a Heathwren here before and to put it into perspective, I used to walk to school through the same patch of bush. And yes, I would have noticed, I started birding in 5th class.

The really amazing thing is that this was my bogey bird for about 15 years, and now it turns up less than 1 km from home. It will be interesting to see if they hang around as I wouldn't call it prime heathwren habitat as the understorey isn't as thick as where I expect to see them (usually further up the mountains).

Cheers
Graham Turner
