Qld govt to declare new national park
August 6, 2008 - 6:08AM
The Queensland government will hand back almost 182,000 hectares of
land on Cape York on Wednesday to traditional owners and create a new
national park.
The 160,000 hectare Kulla (McIllwraith Range) National Park, which
includes unique tropical rainforest wilderness, will be jointly
managed by the state and indigenous people.
Premier Anna Bligh will hand over the land at a ceremony at Coen on
Wednesday.
Alec Marr, executive director of the Wilderness Society, said the
Kaanju, Ayapathu, Lama Lama and Umpila peoples had sought the return
of their land for many years.
The McIlwraith Range area is the largest area of tropical rainforest
wilderness left in Australia.
It has the greatest diversity of Australia's orchid species and over
half of its butterfly species.
It is also home to endangered species such as the cassowary.
