Hi All
In response to recent postings about Fiordland Penguins washing ashore dead
(WA) and another Eudyptes penguin (possible Fiordland ?) alive near Geelong
in Victoria, I add the following. On Sunday 3 August, Daniel and David
Baxter collected a beach-washed (partly decomposed) Fiordland Penguin from
the beach at Bales Bay on the S coast of Kangaroo Island. This was in
response to the earlier postings which gave rise to me and my eldest sons
searching Flour Cask Bay and Bales Bay for this species. Having found one
within the first half day of searching - one wonders how many more may be
strewn along KI/SA coastline. I will continue the search when time permits.
This most recent find brings the number of Fiordland Penguins found on KI to
seven. Another has been identified by Ken Simpson as a Moseley's Rockhopper
Penguin Eudyptes moseleyi. Most of these specimens were collected during
late July - September during the past 20 years.
