Hi all
Visited Bushell's Lagoon in the Hawkesbury yesterday morning from about
745 to 10 am on 3 Aug, entering from Blacktown Rd side. Cold but sunny
after a - 1 overnight at Richmond; beautiful conditions around the
lagoons. Interesting sightings included:
- good numbers of Pelicans with about 70-80 congregating close to the
causeway
- Darters in similarly good numbers, with over 90 counted and Darter
plus Great, Little Black and Little Pied Cormorants all lined up along
one of the partially-submerged fence posts
- small numbers of ducks with Grey Teal in largest numbers, perhaps,
followed by Hardhead, Shoveller (flock of about 15), a few Black Duck
and Chestnut Teal
- no Great Crested Grebe or Musk Duck seen
- very few grebe seen just a handful of Australasians
- a group of 7 Whistling Kites which at one point were all sitting
sunning themselves on the causeway path
- young Black-shouldered Kite uttering 'begging' calls to nearby adult
- a Peregrine Falcon perched on a small rise just above the lagoon on
the west side - on the ground and did not fly for the 2 hour duration of
our visit
- Golden-headed Cisticolas (minus most of the gold) showing well and
very close in weeds along the causeway
- 1 Glossy Ibis
- a few Zebra Finches and Goldfinches
- at least 3-4 Tree Martins, no Fairys seen
- Large, Intermediate (2) and Cattle Egret
- Long-billed Corellas
At Kurrajong Hills, late morning/early pm:
- just hatched Bell Miner in the nest a few inches from our bathroom
window. At least 3 active nests currently in the garden.
- Grey Goshawk and Wedge-tailed Eagle
- plenty of Rainbow Lorikeets
Quick drive along the flats along Cornwallis Road revealed little but
was interesting to see a group of 18 White-faced Herons on one of the
farms - quite a good number to see feeding together.
