Observed at Cape Solander whale watching lookout today at approx 12:15. An all dark sea bird showing pale bill, in company with black browed/ yellow nosed albatross and also Australasian gannets.

Wings shape quite similar to albatross, long very slender with outer portion held kinked backwards and coming to a sharp point. Kink back at greater angle than albatross in company, seen in same or successive binocular views. Followed in binocular for about 3 minutes.

Flight was similar smooth pattern to black browed/yellow nosed albatross in company; smooth banking flight with no flapping noticed in fresh winds at time.

In different binocular views observed albatross and gannet in same field, gannet smaller, All dark bird and albatross in same field, all dark bird slightly smaller, possible a bit larger than gannet in comparison both overall and in wing span. Compared to images I found of the giant petrels in flight, wings of this bird seemed too long and slender, they came to a very distinct point. Any suggestions for ID?

regards,

Chris Ross
