John, I went to Uzbekistan last year on a 'non-birding' cultural trip but did quite a lot of birding on the side. I found 'A Field Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent' by Krys Kazmierczak (Pica Press) covered about 90% of the potential species and most of the remainder were covered in Collins Bird Guide(to Britain and Europe) by Lars Svensson and Peter J.Grant. Uzbekistan has very severe winters so most species migrate out of the place, hence the coverage in these field guides. You can download a checklist of Uzbekistan from 'Avibase-the World bird database'. A very interesting place with some great birding.
