Hi John
I went to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in 2000. The only field guide that
specifically covers that ground is the good 'ol USSR guide:
V.E. Flint, R.L. Boehme, Y.V. Kostin & A.A. Kuznetsov (1984). 'A field guide
to Birds of Russia and adjacent territories.' (Princeton University Press,
Princeton). English language edition ISBN 0-691-02430-8
Due to the significant overlap between Central Asian and European avifauna,
it's also quite useful to have a European field guide along for the ride -
the Collins guide by Mullarney et al. is pretty good. The Flint guide is
great for specific USSR info, but the plates are not magnificent - hence the
handiness of the Euro guide backup. The double-guide is of course not so
handy for keeping your travel kit light!
There are some lovely birds and good birding to be had in the 'stans - along
with the rather fascinating artefacts of human history in the area,
interesting food, very friendly people, etc.... I hope your friend has a
great time, like I did.
L.
