A few decades back when I was involved with wetland surveys in western
Victoria I found a Magpies nest made entirely from short lengths of barbed
wire and lined with sheep wool. The area was completely treeless pasture
country thus the lack of twigs. The exquisite structure looked more like a
piece of sculpture.
Cheers Jeff.

Subject: Magpie Nesting with Chicken-wire
Dear All,
Magpie nesting season appears to have started here in Gorokan, on the
NSW Central Coast. For a few days there has been a Magpie in the yard
collecting sticks, not so unusual. Now the little blighter has started
tugging at the chicken-wire that covers a pergola. Unfortunately (for
me) the chicken-wire is around 20 years old and a bit rusty in parts.
This has allowed the Magster to pull away the wire from the staples
that hold it to the pergola frame in places. I think I will have to do
a few repairs to the wire after the nesting season is over. I know
that Magpies use wire in their nests on occasions, but i have never
seen one so pro-active in obtaining it before.
Cheers,
Carl Clifford
