Hi everyone,
This afternoon from about 1615 until close to dusk I observed a total of 81
Yellow-nosed Albatross, all sitting on the calm, glassy ocean about 1km
offshore from Nobby's rock platforms at Newcastle, NSW.
Initially they were in 4 or 5 evenly spread groups but eventually they formed 2
tight groups, one of about 30 and the other of about 50 birds. The conditions
were great and the light was fantastic and the yellow line on the bill was
obvious through the scope on some of the birds. Also a single Black-browed
Albatross was amongst them, about 20 Gannets flying about and 2 White-fronted
Terns.
There were a couple of trawlers about but as they were heading out for the
night the birds weren't interested. All of the Albatross were still sitting on
the water as I left on dusk.
Wednesday last week I counted 37 Yellow-noseds (but no Black-broweds) following
a fishing trawler into the heads at around 1500. Afternoons definitely seem the
best time for Yellow-noseds up here at the moment.
