Hi Lorne,
I haven't seen these ones either - but looking back over our sightings,
we've certainly seen them in this area previously.

Paul, Liz etc.
I was in and out of the RBG in Melbourne over the last ten days and I didn't
hear or see any.

Hi Liz,
They are seen around the Botanical Gardens, especially in winter - although
in saying that, they're not particularly common. They are also seen around
Royal Park and the zoo. They start to become more common as you head out to
the east and north-east of Melbourne (Eltham, Warrandyte and so forth). The
ones that you saw would definitely have been Yellow-tailed as the Red-tailed
or Glossy-blacks are not found in this area, so if you saw one of those, it
would most likely be an escapee or one that had flown hundreds of kilometres
off course!

I was riding home along the Yarra River Wed evening, about 5.00pm and a
flock of Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoos were moving from tree to tree on
the north side of the river, directly across from the Botanical
Gardens. I'm pretty certain there were Yellow Tailed as although I was
looking into the setting sun, I could see a lighter patch on their
tails, and they were definitely black cockatoos.
How unusual is it for these cocky's to be in the city? I've never seen
them before (but then, I'm new to birding!)
Cheers,
Liz Headland
