On July 1 made a four hour birding visit to Boigu. A single Singing
Starling was photographed in the big trees near the church. No
unexpected bonus sightings of New Guinean species but a few possible new
sightings for the island in the form of a Bush-hen seen from the levee
dikes at the back of the airstrip. Also a Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoo,
Straw-necked Ibis, Black-winged Stilt and Great Cormorant were not
listed in Simpson and Day 99 edition for Boigu if I remember correctly.
Other quality birds included three Australian Hobbies-strikingly dark
dorsally, Radjah Shelduck, Red-backed Button-quail, Broad-billed
Flycatcher, Common Greenshank, Collared Kingfisher, Little Bronze-cuckoo
(heard), masses of Pied Herons, 20 Australian Pelicans, masses of House
Sparrows and several pairs of Rainbow Lorikeets in high altitude flight
mode. Unfortunately with the Rainbow Lorikeets I could not confirm if
they were the green-bellied nominate form of southern New Guinea.

Cheers

Dion
