Alastair,
not quite in the league of those suggested (I'd love a copy of the Digest), but
nonetheless a truly fascinating book, is "Birdsong: A Natural History" by Don
Stap. I pounced on a copy recently which was only half price at $7, though I
suspect it had already been reduced - I don't know what the usual retail price
is. I devoured the first few chapters while on holiday.

Stap looks at why birds sing, how they learn to sing and there are loads of
interesting stories. He delves into bioacoustics research fairly deeply, but
recounts the developments in a very readable way.

good luck spending your $50 - my guess is you'll end up spending more!!

cheers,
Arwen
