G'day Alistair
Buy field guides to foreign countries. Even if you never go they will
transport you.
I would recommend the Collins Bird Guide to Britain and Europe
(Mullarney, Svensson, Zetterstrom and Grant), the SIbley Guide to
Birds (North America), the Birds of Southern Africa (Sinclair, Hockey
and Tarboton) and the Birds of South East Asia (Robson). The first
two are often considered benchmarks in modern field guide technology
and the other two are conventional but mouth-watering books full of
exotic species.
Then there is South America but others can suggest the better field
guides to this region.
Another is Shorebirds by Hayman, Marchant and Prater. Getting on a
bit but I bet it hasn't been surpassed.
I'm sure A&R could get one of these for you.
Cheers
Steve

I have just been given an Angus and Robertson gift voucher for $50 and
(obviously) I would like to purchase a birding-related book. I have
all the
usual suspects - HANZAB, all the Australian field guides, books on
bird-watching (kingbird highway, The big year, Birding on borrowed
time,
Dools' two books etc) and bios such as the new one on Roger Tory
Peterson.
Therefore I wonder if the combined readership of birding-aus could
help me
identify a worthwhile book - perhaps the one book that should be in
any bird
watchers library.
