[auscetnet] Blue whales feeding off Port Phillip Heads
Hello list,
John Joubert of Gone Fishing Charters today called in a sighting of 2 or
possibly 3 blue whales feeding 8 nautical miles south of Port Phillip
Heads, Victoria. John observed the animals for several hours whilst
fishing in the area, he described there being "acres of krill and feeding
birds".
John's sighting last week of a whale in Port Phillip Bay, based on the
description given and the image supplied, (which showed just the dorsal
fin) suggests a species of beaked whale, perhaps southern bottlenose
whale. This area is of course is far from this species' natural habitat
and raises several questions about this sighting which are unfortunately,
unlikely to be answered.
Regards,
David
