Young Great Egrets should have the same or a similar size to the adults - once
they have left their nests. The bill might be a bit shorter though. If you
couldn't see the face well, can you be sure that the bills were really yellow?
Why not juv. - pale-billed - Little Egrets?

Subject: [Birding-Aus] 3/4 sized Yellow-billed Egrets
Hi Folks,
A bit of help please.
I was at Price Saltfields, South Australia, last Tuesday and came across a
group of Egrets. There were Little (obvious), Great (also obvious) and a
number (4) of ¾ sized Yellow-billed Egrets (only slightly larger than the
little but fully developed). I was not close enough to check the face
properly but would I be correct in assuming these to be juvenile Great
rather than Intermediate? I have never seen Int. Egret in SA and unsure of
the status. If I was in Darwin I would have just confidently said
Intermediate.
Your thoughts?
By the way there are still huge numbers of waders there and some nice
coloured ones too!!
