in relation to mallee fowl it has been very dry and so the information i
have may be somewhat out of date-hte easiest way to see a mallee fowl is at
its mound and as it has been so dry there may not be any mounds. Pooginook
conservation park in Riverland SA is a good spot -follow the track around
the edge of the park, you will follow a power line adn then turn south again
and then turn west-there is a mound close to the road along this section of
the track. there is also near here a disused track running north - south
and there is a mound a short way down this track on the eastern side-my i
nformation is some years old. the tracks is sandy, so be aware of this,
although they are passable by 2 wheel drive. If youi decide to go there,
other good birds are regent parrot as well as striated grasswren.(not ot
mention red lored whistler, which i haven't seen myself!) NOrtheast corner
of the park as the track gets to the powerl line is a good place for
striated grasswren. I have also seen regent parrot there but a much more
reliable spot is on the river murray near Loveday(loveday is near Barmera
and Cobdogla). go down road leading to loveday pumping station and turn to
the right when youi get to the station. Follow track along the river until
you get as far as you can go and early in the morning and at teh end of the
day, regent parrots are extremely likely -they roost in river red gums there
after feeding in teh mallee. There is also a white bellied sea eagle nest
there adn has been for over forty years the white bellied sea eagle is
commonly seen. by the way it is a good spot to camp.
