I had a bit of a lorikeet themed day around Sydney today (6 Apr), with
some interesting lorikeet sightings in and northwest of the city.
There are currently many Rainbow Lorikeets in the Kurrajong Hills area
(c 80 kms nw of Sydney). In 5 years of regular observations here this
species has been at best an irregular visitor, but on 5 and 6 Apr (and
according to family members for the past few weeks) there were several
groups of 6-8 birds present. As per the recent notes on this species
here, Rainbow numbers have increased in many areas in recent years and I
would not be surprised if this is more than a temporary irruption into
the Kurrajong foothills but I guess that remains to be seen. To me it
seems Rainbows have spread/increased in western Sydney in recent years.
In addition, there were several small flocks of Musk Lorikeets around
Douglas Farm Rd in Kurrajong Hills today. This is another species which
I have only noted previously on very few occasions here. I didn't notice
any eucalypts flowering locally but assume some flowering activity has
brought both species in.
Back in the city, I had several sightings of Scaly-breasted Lorikeet
around Moore Park/Centennial Park this afternoon - the first 3 of
individual birds and then a group of 6. I live in this area but have
only one recent record of this species in the inner city.
