I visited Lake Connewarre and Hospital Swamps on Sunday after a pleasant
lunch in Barwon Heads.
My timing wasn't great as my arrival at Hospital Swamps coincided with the
arrival of rain and wind gusts that made my scope virtually useless. This
was at the Hospital Swamps lane and I only stayed briefly as conditions
were unpleasant and visibility restricted.
There were 3-4 Black-shouldered Kites, a Swamp Harrier, lots of White-faced
Herons and Black-fronted Dotterels and other small waders (possibly
Red-necked stints) on the water's edge.
As we drove away, the rain stopped so I tried again at Baenchs Lane. I
took the management track that heads northeast across the end of the swamp
but was nowhere near water. A few White-throated Needletails and Swallows
zoomed around and there were ducks in the distance but too far away for
positive identification. Rain swept in again and I trudged back to the
car.
There is another management track that heads to the east and I suspect that
this would have got me close to water. Can anyone confirm this for my next
visit?
As we were driving back through Geelong, I noticed Jerringot Wetlands on
Belmont Common and made a quick right turn into the golf course entrance.
The little bird hide there is unusual (awkward)but gave shelter from the
wind and rain (drizzle really). Again, it was only a brief visit but there
were Chestnut and Grey Teal, a Black-fronted Dotterel, a White-headed
Stilt, 3 Royal Spoonbills, Purple Swamphens, New Holland and White-plumed
Honeyeaters and an overflight of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. I enjoyed
reading the letter from a primary school child to "Sam and sally Snipe"!
Another place to visit again when I have more time.
Regards
David
