When the White-winged Black Terns arrive in
Australia in late spring, the young birds from the northern summer are
past the early juvenile stage. They look quite different from the pics
shown. They are very dark. We don't see White-wings in Australia in
early juvenile plumage. By the time they arrive they are in transition
to first immature. I'm not flash on Whiskered Terns, but they're not
White-wings.
I also had a look at HANZAB, and anyone looking should know that in the
page of this species in flight, the Black Tern and White-winged Black
Tern captions are reversed. White-winged Black Terns have black in
their underwings. If there was a later edition of HANZAB perhaps the
error was rectified.
