A purely anecdotal piece on this thread:

In my early birding days (60's) I recall that feeding RL's was a major tourist 
attraction on the Gold Coast in SE Queensland at a particular wildlife park - 
and certainly at least several hundred arrived each afternoon from memory. 
Probably more.
I recall being both interested to see them close up but also being mildly 
disturbed at the "unnatural" circumstances - teenage ecological sensitivites 
stirring perhaps?

No doubt this was a major factor in reinforcing/supporting a significant local 
population.
