When I began birding in earnest around 1988, Rainbow Lorikeets were not
present in the Newcastle area. We had to stop off in Lane Cove Park on the
way to somewhere in Sydney to tick them. Shortly after this, some animal
rights activists released a large number of parrots, including Little
Corellas and Rainbow Lorikeets from cages in Blackbutt Reserve (Newcastle).
Whether the current populations of these birds in Newcastle are descended
from those or not is unknown, but the sudden increase in numbers of these
birds in the area happened around the early 90s.
