On 6-03-08 Russ Jago, Greg Clanct and myself did run around the wetland in the
Clarence Valley.
At present there is extensive areas of suraface water following flooding and
birds are well
dispersed. Highlights were 35+ Brolga off Post Office Lane Ulmarra and 3 off
Mantons Lane
Lawrence, 4 adult and 8 immature Black-necked stork at at different locations,
1 jacana with 1
young and 2 adults. Highlight of the day was within 1 km of Greg's home, an
adult Osprey perched
on old bridge pile in the Orara River at Coutts Crossing feeding on fish.
Although common in
Clarence Valley from Grafton to the coast it is a number of years since one has
been observed in
this location.
For anyone travelling the Pacific Highway and needing a quick injection of
Brolga, turn off h'way
just north of Ulmarra into Post Office Lane and either first turn right into
Charlton Lane and check
out the paddock around the dairy and behind the houses or continue down PO lane
about 1 km to
paddock of corn stubble. They have been there for about 6 weeks but may move
as other corn is
about to be harvested in area
