G'day,
Following a claimed sighting of Beck's Petrel in the Coral Sea in 2006 (not
accepted by BARC), Hadoram Shirihai has rediscovered the birds off New
Ireland in the Bismarck Archipelago, not only photographing the bird but
recovering a dead bird from the water - only the third specimen ever. This
was in August 2007, so may be old news to some, but this article appeared in
Birdwatch yesterday with an accompanying photo:

The photo is interesting - it certainly looks like a typical Tahiti Petrel
(Pseudobulweria rostrata) at first glance to me, including the very robust
bill. However, Shirihai was able to compare the apparently appreciable size
differences with rostrata at close quarters and the specimen proved it. It's
a magnificent find, up there with the rediscovery of New Zealand
Storm-Petrel a few years ago.
