There is an earlier document "An Index of Australian Bird Names" produced by CSIRO Div of Wildlife Research (Technical paper No. 20, 93 pp) printed in 1969. This book lists all the common and scientific names for all Aus indigenous and introduced birds known at that time along with a statement as to the range/distribution and has an index of all the names in the end which would be useful in discussions with old-timers or bushies in trying to establish the identity of a particular reported species. Each species has the (then) accepted common name and all the other known names and the scientific name/s. Plenty of 'obscure names" therein!!

I did a search of a second hand book dealer and found that it was available for $15-$20.

Apparently there is an earlier list produced by the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union, 1926., 1926 of 212 pp also available from 2nd hand book dealers
Regards
Bob
