g'Day all
The Australia 2020 Summit to be held on the 19th and 20th April 2008,
http://www.australia2020.gov.au/about/index.cfm could provide an
excellent forum to lobby birding issues. But what issues do we as
birding-aus's see as important and how could we put them to the summit
as a submission from us as a group?
Conservation management is obviously a high priority but it is probable
that many organizations will pursue this need with vigour at the summit
however there are other issues that are critically important to the
future social fabric of birding.
One such issue is free access to land, particularly Crown Lands and
Pastoral leases and probably also to many parks and reserves for the
purposes of birding and other legitimate conservation orientated pursuits.
During my birding lifetime, the constant erosion of rights over free
access to much of Australian land mass has occurred with little
discrimination between damaging consumptive activities and possibly
desirable additional uses of land. Access to vast areas for birding has
become so difficult now that limited access should now be considered a
major influence when comparing population results from recent bird
surveys with those from a previous era. I.e. Comparing survey results of
the current bird atlas with the original atlas.
Access to land for amateur conservation is a very important issue. It
directly influences the potential enjoyment of birding which has a
directly influence on the number of people who will take up birding and
this directly influences the status and consideration of birds in
future conservation management issues.
