Flying with protection

Having seen a magpie chase a pardalote aggressively and persistently,
I can understand a pardalote wanting a bit of "air support".

Perhaps it was peckish - or peevish? I can't think of any good reason
why a magpie would consider a pardalote a threat or a competitor.
Any suggestions?
