Greg Clancy and I did a run around the traps in the Clarence Valley today and
rounded up the usual suspects on the wetlands.30+ WTNTs at Sth Grafton. 100+ at
Clarenza.3 at Swan Creek.4+ Gillettes Ridge. 58 Brolgas including 1 young at
Ulmarra. 7 Black necked storks including 2 banded juveniles throughout the
valley. Jacana, Channel bill cuckoo and 13+ dollar birds at Gillettes Ridge.
Plumed whistle ducks on flooded paddock Cherrys Lane. Buff banded Rail at
Gillettes Ridge.
The Lawrence Egret Colony is approaching the end of the breeding season but
still produced about 1000 cattle egrets.25 Great Egret nests and nestlings.20+
Intermediate Egret nests and nestlings,1 Little Egret in breeding plumage.50+
White Ibis nests and nestlings.60+ Straw-necked Ibis nests. 3 Great Cormorant
nests.100+ Little Black Cormorants nests. 2 Darters on nests + 5 nestlings. 30
Pied Cormorants on nests. 50 Royal Spoonbill nests. 1 Pink-eared Duck on nest
in fork of paperbark with another on water near tree.2 chestnut Teal with
young. Pheasant Coucal near edge of water.
There has been variable rain throughout the Valley with reports of 700 mm for
year to date. Swamps overflowing, extensive wetlands and flooded paddocks.Just
another day in Paradise.
