Bill Stent, Ruth Woodrow, Peter Shute and I all saw a single Kelp Gull at
the WTP on Sunday. The bird was flying south-west past the mouth of Little
River. We identified the Kelp Gull by the size (in comparison to Silver
Gulls nearby) and by the entirely white tail. About a minute later we saw a
Pacific Gull flying in the same direction, so could quite readily make a
comparison – in particular we noted the black band across the tail of the
Pacific Gull.
