Folks,
With the strengthening N-E/E winds and lots of rain falling, I went down to
Mistral Point where I met David Mitford. The winds were 20-25 knots, gusting
to 30 knots. We set up in the cave overlooking the seabaths. Before 7pm
David spotted a distant adult Sooty Tern, which I managed to find about a
minute later before it disappeared southward beyond Magic Point – my first
Sooty outside of Qld. But wait there’s more – about 15 minutes later we saw
an adult and a juvenile some 50m off the cliff in front of us.
There were literally thousands of Wedge-tails, tens of Short-tails, a few
Fluttering SW, many Pomarines and at least 2 Long-Tailed Skuas.
With the winds expected to both increase and move more North-Easterly
between now and late tomorrow afternoon, there should be plenty of goodies
on show (but do bring waterproof clothing as well as tissues to clean the
glass).
One happy birder in Sydney – Graham Buchan
