Several members of our group are happy with  Uniden 2 watt UHF handhelds - not cheap, but can be bought as a pair with headsets which you might find useful. See http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_uh064sx2_index.asp

Claimed range 10km line of sight, but not in hilly or very thickly vegetated country.  We use them most when doing 500 metre Atlas Surveys, and always maintain contact. They can also be used in a convoy, provided the vehicles are not too far  apart.

The NiMH battery pack can be replaced by 4 AAA alkalines when you run out of power.
