I recommend both of Sean Dooley's books, 'The Big Twitch' and 'Anoraks To
Zitting Cisticolas', both very funny. I thought 'The Big Twitch' was slightly
better, but both very enjoyable.

Attenborough's 'The Life Of Birds' is a good book on bird biology in general
and also has some very nice pictures. I also have 'Birdwatching In Australia &
New Zealand' by Ken Simpson and Zoe Wilson, which deals with things like
identification, habitat and equipment for birding with a focus on Austalian &
NZ birds, and I think it's a very useful book, particularly beginners.

Hope that's helpful

Cheers
