I wonder was this a vocal sound or a bill snapping. Many birds use bill snapping in situations like that. When I was editor of Canberra Bird Notes I published an article about that. It is Prendergast, H.D.V. 1987, 'Notes on bill snapping in Australian birds', Canberra Bird Notes 12(3): 86-89. The Magpie was included. Philip |
